Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oneida Square Round Retro Leaves 53-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8Customer Review: Nice basic set Summary: 4 StarsThe set was a little fancier than an "everyday" dish set, but not as fancy as my fine china. The shape of the pieces give the set a modern look.
Customer Review: Perfect, once you...... Summary: 5 StarsThe dishes are beautiful. They are modern, but very classic.
They are simple, yet elegant when placed on the table. I have used them since the Holidays and have gotten many positive remarks.
Because of the classic white look, they complement all styles of table settings and accessories.
The most difficult thing about getting these dishes was to get them ALL in one piece delivered. The packing was lousy. Several dishes were broken, which I requested to be replaced. But, policy prevented me from sending back only the broken ones. The entire shipment weighed more than 60 lbs. which, in my opinion, should not have been shipped back and forth. It was very costly in frt. charges for Amazon.
Customer Review: DON'T CHOOSE THESE! Summary: 1 StarsI was excited to order a large set of dishes where everything would match and at such a good price. For once, I didn't read customer reviews like this first...I should have!
The first set arrived and the box was so heavy that it was labeled "Mandatory Two Man Lift". Of course it was left on my porch and I had to scoot it an inch or so at a time and just about killed myself getting it over the door jamb. I then opened it right by the door and began unloading it bit by bit. Right away I saw that the dishes are STONEWARE and not PORCELAIN as advertised. Maybe amazon thinks those are the same, but we users know the difference! I have always avoided stoneware because it is so darn heavy and also because it chips if you look at it crosswise. They are attractive though and I immdiately realized that there was no darn way I could ship them back since I couldn't possibly lift the box to take it anywhere to mail it!
I thought "live and learn" and so I kept unloading. All was fine EXCEPT that all 8 fruit plates were missing. I called amazon customer service, explained this, and they said to send them back. I explained that I couldn't because of the weight. They came back with an offer I couldn't refuse: I could keep the first set and they would send me a complete new set since they had no way to replace just the fruit plates.
The second box arrived a couple days later. This time, several pieces were broken and, yup, you guessed it..STILL NO FRUIT PLATES. I surrender. I now have an incomplete service for somewhere between 8 and 16 of a bunch of heavy dishes that are nice to look at but way bulkier than I wanted. AMAZON SHOULD STOP SELLING THESE AS THE VAST MAJORITY OF BUYERS ARE UNHAPPY WITH THE PRODUCT.
Customer Review: Shattered and poorly packaged Summary: 1 StarsThe dishes came in a terribly thin cardboard box that only had "Heavy items" written on the outside in small print. No signs saying "Fragile" or "Handle W/Care"...which might have helped since I received a box full of shattered dishes. Not just broken in a few places, quite literally shattered and in millions of pieces. In my opinion, the packaging was not nearly sufficient enough to protect all the pieces of the set, which is a shame since from what I could tell from the pieces, the dishes looked ok. Amazon customer service was a nightmare to deal with as well, maybe it was just the holidays, but their staff seemed either uncaring or frankly, didn't seem to understand English very well and read off a script to poorly answer my questions.
Customer Review: Retro Leaves did not live up to my expectation! Summary: 2 StarsI was really surprised when my shipment came. The outside box looked like a marshmallow - it had obviously been tossed around a bit. When I opened it (which was very easy in it's condition) I saw that the plastic shipping pillows had burst on one end and the interior box was broken open. I expected to find nothing but shards, but only one side plate was chipped. My shock came, however, when I saw the dishes. They were clearly advertised as "porcelain," but are clearly marked "stoneware." They are much heftier than I would expect porcelain to be. My next shock was the quality. They are advertised as being originally $180. I can't imagine anyone paying that for this quality merchandise. My reaction as I was unpacking the dishes was that they were 'seconds'. The glaze is irregular and many of them have black specks of something in the glaze. I have seen similar dinnerware sets at several stores (Linen 'n Things has a number of styles) but I didn't buy them because of their quality (which was better than Retro Leaves). I also mistakenly thought that a product with Oneida's name on it would have a certain level of quality. Obviously, I am very dissatisfied, but will keep them because the hassle of sending them back is more than I want to deal with.
